How to apply for MBBS admission in government college?

The first step to get admission in MBBS in government medical college is to appear for single undergraduate level medical entrance exam, NEET 2020. For this, candidates had to fill NEET application form 2020 which was available from December 2 to December 31, 2019, in online mode. The examination is slated to be held on May 3, 2020 in pen paper based mode. A significant change this year is that AIIMS and JIPMER have been merger with NEET. The exam will contain 180 multiple choice questions from Chemistry, Physics and Biology. National Testing Agency (NTA) will declare NEET result 2020 on June 4, and candidates who secure the category-wise minimum qualifying percentile will be eligible for admission to MBBS in medical colleges in India.

Admission in MBBS in government college under 15% All India Quota

Those medical aspirants who clear NEET 2020 and get shortlisted under 15% AIQ, will have to register themselves for the process of counselling. Basic eligibility criteria for MBBS admissions

The basic eligibility criteria that candidates are required to fulfill is mentioned in the points below. Candidates are advised to go through them thoroughly.

• Age limit – Medical aspirant must be of 17 years and should not exceed 25 years.

• Qualifying examination – Aspirants must qualify their Class 12 or equivalent examination by securing the minimum qualifying percentile in Physics Chemistry and Biology

• Domicile – Candidates must fulfill the domicile requirements as set by the respective state admission authorities for admission

• Minimum qualifying percentile – Medical aspirants must secure the category-wise prescribed cut off in NEET 2020

From 2020, the medical aspirants after Class 12 who wish to get MBBS admission must start preparing for only one entrance examination. For admission to MBBS courses in India, it is mandatory to appear for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Other entrance exams at the undergraduate entrance test which are All India Institute of Medical Sciences for MBBS (AIIMS MBBS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER MBBS) entrance exams have been merged with the NEET.

There are about 76,928 MBBS seats which are available across more than 532 medical colleges in India. Besides this, AIIMS offers around 1205 seats in its 15 campuses including its main campus in the national capital, New Delhi. JIPMER also offers 200 MBBS seats through its own entrance test for the JIPMER Puducherry and Karaikal campuses. MBBS admission to all these seats will be filled on the basis of NEET scores.

However, it is the NEET exam which is taken by almost every aspirant for MBBS admissions in India. In 2019, 15,19,375 candidates appeared for the examination in contrast to the year 2018 where nearly 13 lakh candidates registered for NEET. As many as 14,10,754 candidates qualified NEET in 2019 who were eligible for the counselling process.

The counselling for NEET is conducted for three rounds including mop-up round. Through NEET, 15% of the total seats in government colleges (except Jammu and Kashmir) are reserved for All India Quota seats, which is filled by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). While the MBBS admission to 85% state quota seats is granted by respective state counselling authorities. Admissions for Deemed University MBBS programmes is done at an all India level by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on behalf of the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
